SUMMARY: This report presents the outcomes of a technical assignment carried out under the Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) Project in Amhara, Ethiopia (2019–2024). The assignment aimed to develop a practical, remote sensing-based methodology for monitoring vegetation cover change in exclosure areas—sites designated for natural regeneration by excluding human and livestock activity. The assignment also included capacity building to strengthen local expertise in applying these monitoring methods.

Extensive ecosystem degradation along the coastal areas of Ghana highlights the need for targeted landscape restoration. This study identified areas with high restoration potential by evaluating environmental, climatic, and anthropogenic determinants of mangrove distribution. We tested multiple habitat suitability models, including Random Forest (RF), Generalized Additive Model (GAM), Generalized Linear Model (GLM), Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt), and an ensemble approach. Mangrove occurrence records were compiled from field observations, drone-derived data, and publicly available biodiversity and mapped datasets. The ensemble GAM-RF model emerged as the most robust model, with the highest predictive performance. Hydrological and topographic factors were the strongest predictors of mangrove habitat suitability, particularly proximity to rivers and the coastline, low-elevation terrain (<5 m asl), and temperature-related bioclimatic variables, while precipitation metrics and anthropogenic proxies played secondary roles. Using the ensemble approach, the estimated potentially suitable habitat ranged from 417 to 1313 km2, indicating that substantial areas remain available for mangrove restoration. These findings align with ongoing national and international restoration initiatives, including the coastal restoration plan, and have important implications for coastal protection, carbon sequestration, fisheries habitat, and local livelihoods. Our findings demonstrate that multi-model habitat suitability analyses can guide spatially targeted, and evidence-based restoration planning.

Abstract Peatlands drained for agriculture and other uses release substantial carbon dioxide. Many countries estimate these emissions using the 2014 IPCC Tier 1 emission factors. Here we calibrated an ecosystem model with data from two cultivated peatland sites in Norway and simulate carbon dioxide emissions at 50 sites nationwide for 2001–2022. Model results showed that carbon dioxide emissions were strongly controlled by water table depth and aligned well with observations from other European peatlands of similar climate zones. Crucially, the Tier 1 emission factor matched our simulations only under very deep water tables (< –0.7 m), but overestimated emissions by 31–88% when water levels ranged from –0.7 m to –0.3 m. This indicates that Tier 1 methods may overstate emissions from cultivated peatlands in cool temperate and boreal regions, inflating estimates of mitigation potential. Tier 2 or 3 approaches can reduce uncertainty but require more field data.

In Norway, agroclimatic zones (ACZs) are a valuable tool for national analyses in subject areas concerning the optimized management of agricultural land resources. However, current Norwegian ACZs have been criticized for having an outdated standard climate normal (1931–1960), a limited representation of the local climatic variation, a lack of important model parameters, and weak methodological documentation. Therefore, this paper presents new ACZs for Norway that address these weaknesses. The most significant methodological updates are the use of the standard climate normal of 1991–2020, additional weather data variables, the downscaling of weather data to 250 m hexagons, and the incorporation of phenological crop models for spring wheat, spring barley, and forage grass. The grass model was calibrated with the number of grass harvests at research stations, while the grain models were calibrated with subsidy claim data. The modeled zones for the three crops were combined into the general ACZs. Example maps of the crop zones and new ACZs for the selected regions and the whole country are presented. The new ACZs are more robust, agronomically relevant, and better aligned with the current climatic conditions in Norway. The deliberate exclusion of factors other than climate ensures the new ACZs’ national comparability and their applicability in policy development, land-use planning, climate adaptation, and agronomic assessments at the national scale.
