3Q monitoring of plants
Vascular plants are the most important group of organisms for most terrestrial animals – including us humans.
Grazing Land and Unmanaged Grassland
The 3Q Programme monitors the distribution of vascular plants in agricultural landscapes in relation to land use. For practical and resource-related reasons, the monitoring of vascular plants in 3Q has so far focused on two types of land: grazing land (areas regularly grazed by livestock) and unmanaged grassland (former grazing or arable land in an early stage of natural rewilding). These are two land types that can have high biological diversity, and at the same time, they are particularly vulnerable to changes influenced by current agricultural policies. This makes them a natural starting point for monitoring.
Field Surveys
Across 97 monitoring squares, a total of 569 survey plots (each 64 m²) have been established and permanently marked to track the number of vascular plant species and their coverage over time. The plots were placed randomly, with the aim of capturing variation and changes in the agricultural landscape as a result of land use.
