Abstract

The book discusses scientific, technical, and sociological aspects of sustainable agricultural value chains, focusing on coffee and tea production. The book advocates a value-chain strategy and highlights the importance of tracking the effects of climate change. Increasing the amount of value-added products via irrigation is critical to combating climate change and achieving sustainable development. Furthermore, blockchain technology has the potential to transform agricultural business models and supply chain networks.

Abstract

In Europe, turbot aquaculture has a high potential for sustainable production, but the low tolerance to fishmeal replacement in the diet represents a big issue. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of more sustainable feed formulations on growth and feed performance, as well as nutritional status of juvenile turbot in recirculating aquaculture systems. In a 16-week feeding trial with 20 g juvenile turbot, one control diet containing traditional fishmeal, fish oil and soy products and two experimental diets where 20% of the fishmeal was replaced either with processed animal proteins (PAP) or with terrestrial plant proteins (PLANT) were tested. Irrespective of diets, growth performance was similar between groups, whereas the feed performance was significantly reduced in fish of the PAP group compared to the control. Comparing growth, feed utilisation and biochemical parameters, the results indicate that the fish fed on PAP diet had the lowest performance. Fish fed the PLANT diet had similar feed utilisation compared to the control, whereas parameters of the nutritional status, such as condition factor, hepato-somatic index and glycogen content showed reduced levels after 16 weeks. These effects in biochemical parameters are within the physiological range and therefore not the cause of negative performance. Since growth was unaffected, the lower feed performance of fish that were fed the PAP formulation might be balanced by the cost efficient formulation in comparison to the commercial and the PLANT formulations. Present study highlights the suitability of alternative food formulation for farmed fish.

Abstract

Industrial kelp aquaculture is under development in Nordic countries including Norway. Kelps are a rich source of nutrients, taste and other bioactive substances with a large potential in food applications. There are some critical challenges for the food industry to a broader use of this new resource such as the reduction of iodine and potential allergens present. SusKelpFood is a new collaborative research project which primary objective is to enable innovative solutions for the sustainable production of safe, nutritious and flavourful ingredients from cultivated kelps for the food industry. SusKelpFood draws on key expertise from Nordic (Norway, Denmark and Iceland) research institutions, a leading actor of the food industry in Scandinavia and kelp producers to achieve this goal. The participants will test and develop targeted and energy-efficient processes including fermentation under different conditions, innovative drying and dewatering techniques (e.g. pulse-electric field, microwave-assisted drying) to conserve and prepare cultivated kelps for large-scale food applications in a sustainable way. Laboratory techniques will be applied to document the food safety (presence of contaminants, iodine, food allergens), nutritional and sensory profiles, and flavor-active substances of kelp ingredients produced from different processes. Consumer surveys, interviews and testing of product prototypes containing kelp ingredients will provide valuable information on consumer behavior for this type of products. The knowledge generated during SusKelpFood will promote future-oriented solutions for a broader inclusion of sustainably produced kelp in manufactured food products. The SusKelpFood project is financed by the Research Council of Norway and runs for 3 years from 2022 to 2024.

Abstract

This report introduces a framework and scale specific guidelines for the parameterization of Natural/Small Water Retention Measures (NSWRM) in modelling approaches. More specifically, it provides a detailed translation of NSWRM into parameters and design approaches for the application in the SWAT+ (catchment scale) and SWAP (field-scale) models, which were selected as the main modelling tools in the OPTAIN project. This document can also be considered as an extension of the well-known Conservation Practice Modelling Guide for SWAT and APEX (Waidler et al., 2011), which is frequently used by the SWAT modelling community for testing the effectiveness of conservation practices. However, besides of conservation practices, the report focuses mainly on NSWRMs, and how they can be implemented in SWAT+, the new and restructured version of SWAT. Analogously, the NSWRM parameters are also described for the SWAP model, which is addressing the field-scale. Compared to previous NSWRM modelling approaches, this methodology enables the setting of NSWRM parameters in the two selected models to improve the description of the related hydrological and hydrochemical processes.

Abstract

This SWAT+ modelling protocol was designed for guiding model setup development and model calibration in 14 European case study sites participating in the modelling component of the EU funded research and innovation project OPtimal strategies to retAIN and re-use water and nutrients in small agricultural catchments across different soil-climatic regions in Europe (OPTAIN). These 14 case studies are small agricultural catchments (ranging in size from 21 to 254 km2 ) located in three biogeographical regions of Europe and 12 different countries. The main topic of OPTAIN are Natural/Small Water Retention Measures, which are a relatively new concept. These are small and multi-functional measures for the retention/management of water and nutrients in the landscape, thus addressing drought/flood control, management of water quality problems, climate change adaptation, biodiversity restoration, etc.
