Forest Management

The Forest Management Department conducts research to provide evidence-based knowledge about how management choices affect the structure, growth and resilience of Norwegian forests. The department seeks to optimize sustainable timber production and the provisioning of other ecosystem services.

Our research spans the following fields:

  • Forest growth and yield, including carbon dynamics
  • Silvicultural practices to meet the needs of multiple ecosystem services
  • Managing forest damage risks
  • Development of decision-support tools for the forest sector
  • Scenario-based forecasting of forest development and associated ecosystem services
  • Biogeochemical processes in forests, including CO2 and methane fluxes
  • Biogeophysical processes in forests, including hydrology and surface energy fluxes
  • NIBIO’s long-term forest experiments
