Bioeconomy is an economy that exploits biological resources from land and sea, as well as waste, as inputs for food, energy and other goods and services. NIBIO’s main research focus in this regard is on biological resources from soil, plants, forests and land. Our researchers look at which parts of nature should be protected, managed or utilised in order to extract value from nature in an environmentally and climate friendly way. On these pages, our researchers present some of their research, knowledge and insights within these topics.
In areas with vegetable production the soil is often exposed, without a protective vegetation cover. Thus, the soil is vulnerable to erosion, with a high risk of loss of particles, nutrients and pesticides to watercourses.
Precision fertilization means that fertilization is adapted to the plants' specific nutrient needs at different locations within a field. Precision fertilization requires effective mapping of this need, along with equipment that can efficiently apply variable amounts of fertilizer.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) involves using all available techniques and methods that can be combined to keep the population of plant pests (e.g., weeds, insects, and plant diseases) below the threshold for economic damage. The use of new technology that enables site-specific control is a key principle in IPM and an important focus of our research. We have worked across a broad spectrum of topics, from mechanical weed control using sensor-guided row cleaning and harrowing to targeted herbicide application using cameras mounted on field sprayers, robots, and drones.
