Projects

NIBIO is a project driven research institute and collects approximately 400 million NOK annually in project funding from both national and international sources. A lot of activity is carried out through EU and EEA-projects and we also participate in research projects in Asia, Africa and Latin America. NIBIO coordinates several large international projects with a particular focus on food security and climate change. The list of projects is not complete.

ImpACT of nematodes in Carrots

Norwegian carrot production has doubled in the last 20 years and impressively covers over 90% of the market. However, this intensive carrot production has caused a build up of pests, such as plant parasitic nematodes. Plant parasitic nematodes are generally neglected pests due to unspecific crop symptoms so that damage is often noticed too late. We are already aware of serious crop losses in Norway due to root knot nematodes, often over 50% on heavily infested fields. Nematodes are difficult to manage due to their wide host range, no available nematicides and little knowledge on management options in the country. This project therefore aims to tackle the problem by first mapping the extent of nematode occurrence and damage in carrots. Then by testing various soil amendments that have known effect on nematodes, such as biochar and chitin rich products.Furthermore, to understand interactions between nematodes in the soil and their host plant(s), studies in the rhizosphere will be conducted to elucidate the mode of infection to plant roots, and plants responce to infection.Such basic studies will generate new knowledge and contribute to novel control strategies long-term.
