Nine facts about Norwegian agriculture - 2020

Today, the average Norwegian drinks 89 litres of milk each year. 30 years ago, the amount was almost twice as much. Norwegians consume 18 kilograms of cheese, and 67 kg meat. This is five kg more cheese and almost 20 kg more meat than in 1988. The total organically farmed area is decreasing, whereas the demand for organic produce and other foods is steadily increasing.

Climate Cure 2030 — forestry measures

Forest covers 37 % of our country with an annual net uptake of around 23 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents. It is possible to increase net uptake in forests through improved forest management, and with time, increase the level of annual C sequestration on a national level.

Increasing grain yield on existing land

There is a huge potential to increase Norwegian grain production. This is mainly because the arable land we currently use has a significantly higher potential yield than the volume currently harvested. Analyses show that this "yield gap" is greater in Norway than in other European countries.

Evaluation of agricultural climate measures

As a basis for Climate Cure 2030, NIBIO evaluated four measures for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector. These are cover crops, drainage, reduced food waste and changing from a diet based on meat to one based on vegetables and fish.
