Bioforsk’s senter in the North - Arctic Agriculture and Land Use Division, has in the last 5 years prioritized the research area of coastal ecology because we see great potential for value creation in the sea, ranging from the production of biomass for the production of high quality food and feed additives and supplements, and pharmaceutical products. In addition, in our department in Bodø we work with R & D work related to the potential for an environmentally friendly and sustainable utilization of algae as a resource for agriculture and aquaculture. Nofima performs R & D in quaculture, fisheries and food industries. The use of algae is also one of Nofima priority research specifically targeting fish. Macroalgae (seaweeds) are an important untapped reservoir of proteins, minerals, vitamins, fiber, iodine and bioactive molecules. More knowledge about the potential for commercial use of macro-algae are necessary in both conventional and organic livestock and fish production.
